The Greater Victoria Green Team removed nearly 95.2 pounds of trash from the streets of Langford on Saturday as part of its Earth Month cleanup efforts.
Earth Month runs for April, and The Greater Victoria Green Team worked with the City Of Langford’s engineering department to clear streets, sidewalks and green spaces.
Around 60 volunteers also removed the equivalent of 53 bathtubs of Himalayan blackberry, English ivy and holly from around the UVic campus.
The green team carried out 10 activities over the course of the month, including invasive species removal, fire smart activities, planting initiatives, and litter cleanups. In that time, 369 community members volunteered for 810.5 hours, helping with habitat restoration and cleaning up the community.
Across the region, 82 cubic metres of invasive species were removed, 170 native trees and shrubs were planted, and 2,328 square metres of parks were revitalized.
During Earth Month, the Greater Victoria Green Team won an environmental stewardship award from the Climate Action in Colwood (CENiC) group.
“We have about 5,000 members and hope we continue to grow.”
Two invasive species removal activities will occur on May 25 and May 26:

Saturday May. 25 - at Esquimalt Gorge Park from 9:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.;

Sunday May. 26 - at UVic (along the Alumni Chip Trail close to Parking Lot 10) from 9:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
