Students of a North Saanich elementary school are asked to remain vigilant and to be escorted one the way to and from school after a bear was sighted near the school grounds.

According to a notice sent by Deep Cove Elementary on June 5, a bear was sighted north of the school in the Hillgrove and Cloake Hill area of Deep Cove.

“For students who walk or ride their bikes home unescorted, particularly in that direction, we are asking parents to please pick up your children from school. Parents should also escort bus students from bus stops in this area,” noted a notice from Philip Jungen, principal of the school.

Over the weekend, a black bear in the Brentwood Bay area of Central Saanich prompted a police warning.

B.C. conservation officers say most problems with bears and human-wildlife conflict begin when people allow animals access to non-natural food sources such as garbage.
