If you’re in the need to speed in Central Saanich this summer, a hefty punishment could come your way.

“Speeding continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes across B.C.,” said Central Saanich Police Chief Ian Lawson.

The penalty for speeding ranges from $138 to $483, and can include impoundment of the vehicle for a period of time.

Throughout the summer months, the Central Saanich Police Service said that they see more vehicles speeding as well as people walking, biking, and sharing the road.

“There are kids on the road, and there are more construction zones with roadside workers,” Lawson said.

Police remind drivers to respect pedestrians, use caution at intersections, and implement a four-second following distance when road conditions are poor.

In B.C., 80 people die annually in speed-related crashes. Pedestrians hit at 30km/h have a 90 per cent survival rate, but at 50km/h, the chance of death is 80 per cent.
